Dr Chizuru Nishida is the Coordinator of the Nutrition Policy and Scientific Advice Unit (NPU) of the Department of Nutrition for Health and Development at WHO in Geneva. She has Masters' degree in Medical Anthropology and Ph.D. in Nutrition Science. Her career in WHO began in 1984 in the Maternal and Child Health Programme in the WHO Headquarters in Geneva where she worked on the WHO's research project on infant and young child feeding and rearing practices which was developed as part of the Joint UNICEF/WHO Nutrition Support Programme (JNSP).

As the Coordinator of NPU, she leads and coordinates the work on: 1) development of science-based guidelines related to dietary goals and policy options for preventing obesity and diet-related noncommunicable diseases, dissemination of these science-based WHO guidelines and latest available evidence on effective nutrition-related interventions through the WHO e-Library of Evidence for Nutrition Action (eLENA), and 2) provision of guidance and support to the regions and countries in scaling up the implementation of intersectoral nutrition policies and strategies to address the double burden of malnutrition throughout the lifecourse, including operational support for building capacity in assessing policy and programme implementation gaps and constraints. She also represents WHO at the Codex Committee on Food Labelling and the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Food for Special Dietary Uses.
