Dr. Liu is currently Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine (Endocrinology) at Brown University. Dr. Liu’s research spans from basic inquiry of the genetic basis for metabolic diseases to molecular epidemiology and clinical risk modeling and interventions. He has been principal investigator of NIH-sponsored studies that cut across the fields of molecular genetics, nutrition, and clinical trials concerning the early detection and prevention of vascular disorders in diverse human populations. Recent work has been at the interface of nutrition and genomics with emphasis on understanding their interplays in affecting vascular outcomes.Using biomarkers for dietary carbohydrates, Dr. Liu and colleagues were among the first to validate dietary glycemic load (GL) in population-based studies and prospectively link high GL to increased cardiovascular risk. He has published more than 300 research reports in top-tier biomedical journals (NEJM, JAMA, Annals, Diabetes, AJHG, and AJCN), some of which are among the most-frequently cited in medicine and nutrition (total citations ~65,000, h-index=114 according to Google Scholar).Prof. Liu is an elected fellow/member of several prestigious medical societies including the American Heart Association (FAHA), the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and American Epidemiological Society (AES). Prof Liu has served on several advisory committees for local, national and international authorities addressing issues in medicine, nutrition and public health (WHO, NIH, CDC and MRC, including the medical Institutional Review Board at UCLA).
